Hi guys, as we are hoping to get a pup in the next few months, I'm thinking about pet insurance? Yes or no? Alternatively I was thinking about opening a separate savings account, that way if nothing happens we don't lose that money

Thanks for all of the great insight! I haven't had a look at the costs of insurance but I think I may just go the route of setting money aside each month rather than having to pay insurance and never knowing whether we will need it!

Pet insurance can definitely be a smart investment, especially if your pup experiences any unexpected health issues or accidents. Also, opening a separate savings account is also a good idea, as it provides a safety net in case of emergencies. It ultimately depends on your budget and comfort level with risk. Personally, I budget what I need for the month for my dogs (all the essentials they need) and I should definitely have money saved for any emergencies that may or may not happen just in case.

Great question... we had pet insurance for several years and it saved us a ton when our dogs got sick unexpectedly. But then sadly the premiums went up significantly because we had made a claim.
Ultimately we made the tough decision that we would cancel the insurance because we could no longer afford it (it was about £100 per month!!!) and we put aside some money into a separate account instead.
For peace of mind, I'd definitely suggest some kind of financial fall back because vet bills can be incredibly expensive and always crop up at the worst times!
