Rescuing animals can be dangerous due to possible aggression and disease. It is very likely a rescue is going to be scared. Scared animals frequently bite. Rabies is easily spread through infected saliva through an open wound or direct contact in the eyes, nose, or mouth. There is no way to test a living animal for rabies. Professionals where protective suits, gloves, and will use a snare on a long pole to protect themselves. I have rescued my fair share of stray, injured, and sick animals so I understand the desire and I respect what you are wanting to do. Just use an abundance of caution.
