Puppy Potty Training
4 month old miniature schnauzer/poodle, rescued from humane society. Sweet and very loving. Watch him closely to see when he's ready to relieve himself and take him out immediately. Can spend 45 minutes where he sniffs and smells and explores yet do nothing. Then as soon as we bring him in he potties. Very frustrating. Is there something we can do to discourage this behavior? In the evening for his last potty, when it's cool outside and he wants to go inside, I do my best to walk him around his "spot" but to no avail. Challenge is we live in a condo and there are many smells because of lots of dogs. HELP!!!!

That is great advice. The only thing I would add is... be consistent. Do the same routine always and the pup will catch on.

We have the same breed, they're incredibly social, loving and also very very intelligent. They need a lot of mental stimulation and it sounds like he loves sniffing so I'd personally give him lots of outdoor time to learn about his surroundings, as you are doing. Things that worked for me: -setting a timer to go out regularly, every half hour or so - taking outside as soon as they wake up, and after finishing eating - ensuring you're cleaning up with a cleaner designed to eliminate enzymes in pet pee - loads of praise and treats when he goes - never telling off if he goes in the house as this will confuse him Hope this helps
