What do you do if your dog is waking you up at 5am and wanting attention/breakfast?

My experience is that dogs will continue whatever behavior where they are rewarded. If waking you up at 5am gets the dog attention and breakfast, the dog will continue to wake you up at 5am. If the dog is hungry, I'm not sure that will be as easy to change as it's not just behavior at work. I can only suggest maybe giving the dog treats or a small amount of food a little later in the evening. I do have cats that used to wake me up around 5am or earlier because they wanted food. I started giving them a small bedtime portion of food just as I'm going to bed and they haven't tried to wake me up early since then.

In order to break this habit you will have to ignore your fuey friend but if your dog is used to going out to potty at 5am then you will have to gradually change the time or there might be an accident
