Are crates essential for a puppy? Would a puppy pen be sufficient?

I would say it depends on the puppy and the size of the pen. My Husky puppy would not have done as well in a pen as she did in the crate. Unless the pen is too big or small, set up in an area that would allow chewing of items, difficult accident cleanup, or allow the puppy to escape a pen should be ok.

I agree with the other post it's going to depend on the size and breed of your dog. I have both and when they are just puppies usually a pen will do for keeping it in a desired location, but as soon as they are big enough to climb a crate will probably be needed
