I would highly recommend using a professional if you have a dog that shows any sign of aggression, any large dog, or any dog that is considered a dangerous breed. It's so important to have solid training in those instances. Rescues that have been abused or are skittish may also benefit from a professional trainer. Other than in those instances, you should be able to work with the pup yourself. And if you are uncertain on how to train, attending a few classes together should get you off to a good start.

To be honest it depends, the decision to hire a professional trainer or train your dog yourself depends on various factors. I've never gone further than taking my dogs to dog training classes. But I'd definitely consider it if I had a dog with behavioral issues etc.
